Unrelated question: since having heel problems, I’m looking at huaraches – how tight is the lacing across the achilles in the back?

The lacing is not necessarily tight – maybe just snug? There should be a bit of movement in the lacing. If you have an irritated achilles it might be an issue. Also, if huaraches are your first step into minimal footwear with no heel lift then the bigger issue might be additional achilles soreness due to stretching it out. Start with very low mileage, work the mileage up gradually, etc.
Are you serious? I didn’t think you were a huaraches kind of guy. To be honest, I mainly wear FiveFingers now. I did some barefooting over the summer and haven’t really worn my huaraches much this year.
